Former Attorney General Barr Assures House Panel Jeffrey Epstein’s Demise Amounted to ‘Certainly Taking His Own Life’

One-time US attorney general William Barr has repeated his assessment that the disgraced financier’s 2019 demise while incarcerated was “clearly self-inflicted” before lawmakers investigating the Epstein’s offenses and connections.

The Former AG’s Statement Before Oversight Committee

William Barr, who acted as attorney general in the Trump administration’s first term, stated to the House oversight committee earlier this week, according to documentation.

Conspiracy Theories and Investigation Results

Unproven claims have for years spread alleging assassination while in federal custody, a theory pushed by a family member and by Epstein’s associate Ghislaine Maxwell. Multiple instances of security lapses at the detention facility in New York where Epstein was held have served to bolster these theories, for which a lack of hard evidence has emerged.

Barr’s Statement and View

In an August deposition, Barr stood by his belief that Epstein took his own life, and said he had been aware that Epstein was under observation leading up to his death.

“The evidence mounted from my perspective that it was certainly a suicide,” he stated.

Video Evidence and Blind Spot

Barr emphasized that he doubted an intruder gained access to Epstein’s cell undetected on security cameras. Yet he acknowledged that the camera had “a small gap” and noted that could make people skeptical.

Conversations with Trump

Barr shared how he told Donald Trump of Epstein’s death.

“I reached out to Trump and said, ‘You better brace for this,’” he mentioned. “His response mirrored mine: ‘How did it happen, despite being imprisoned?’”

Later, Trump mentioned that he had ended the relationship with Epstein long ago and had actually pushed him out from the property.

Background

The panel also released correspondence from former US attorneys general Alberto Gonzalez and the former AG stating they had no pertinent knowledge regarding Epstein.

Oversight head James Comer has also asked Epstein’s representatives for unredacted transaction logs, correspondence records, appointment books and aviation documents. His representatives has already turned over a portion but most omit comprehensive data.

Upcoming Testimony

Former US attorney Alex Acosta, who handled a controversial agreement with Epstein in 2008 enabling him to confess to Florida solicitation charges, is set to appear in the hearing this week.
