Former FBI Head James Comey Enters Not Guilty Plea to Allegations of Lying Congress
Ex- FBI head James the ex-FBI chief has pleaded not guilty to making false statements to congressional representatives and obstructing a legislative process.
His legal representative entered the answer representing him in a US district court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday morning.
The defense lawyer declared he would attempt to have the legal matter thrown out for multiple reasons including that his client, a critic of former President Trump, was being targeted.
Mr Comey was formally accused soon after Donald Trump pressured his chief prosecutor to proceed against him.
Court Developments
At the proceedings on mid-week, Comey's lawyer Patrick Fitzgerald advised the magistrate they planned to present various legal requests to terminate the proceedings before a legal hearing, stating the government's case was retaliatory and that a US attorney was wrongfully designated to handle the proceedings.
Mr Comey's legal matter was first handled by a Virginia prosecutor, who resigned under influence from the former president after his examination into another opponent - NY AG Letitia James - was unable to initiate prosecution.
Judicial Environment
The former director appeared in good spirits as he walked into the legal venue on mid-week, speaking with his legal team and sharing humor. He was supported by his wife, Mrs Failor and daughter Maureen, a US lawyer who the Trump administration terminated.
Following the reading to the judge state his legal protections and the two counts against him in the courtroom on Wednesday, the defendant was inquired if he understood the allegations.
"Yes your honour. Thank you very much," he stated to the court.
Previous Events
The former director was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013 to 2017 and was terminated about several months into Donald Trump's initial presidency as president. At the period, he was overseeing an investigation into Russian election interference and whether there were any relationships between the Russian government and the election effort.
During his tenure, the director caused a counter-response from liberal politicians when he declared just days before the 2016 presidential election that he was probing presidential nominee the candidate's use of a private email server. Indictments against Hillary Clinton were not pursued, resulting in negative feedback from conservative politicians as well.
Present Charges
The federal government assert Mr Comey lied to the legislature during a congressional hearing in September 2020 when he was being examined about both the email probe as well as the Russia election probe. They claim he deceived the Senate by saying he had not permitted an individual at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to disclose to journalistic entities information about the FBI investigations.
Legal representatives also accuse James Comey of "improperly attempting to affect, hinder and delay" the legislative group by providing untrue information to it.
Individual Responses
Through a recording James Comey published to his online platform after he was indicted, he stated he was wrongly accused and charged the former president of behaving like a "autocrat".
"My family and I have been aware for years that there are ramifications to standing up to Donald Trump," he said. "We refuse to live on our bended knee."
"I'm innocent," he continued. "So let's have a trial."
The accusations against James Comey surfaced after Donald Trump posted on online platforms insisting on his chief prosecutor, Pam Bondi, take legal action against Mr Comey and additional individuals.
